FAQ's

What is barter?

By definition, barter is to trade by exchanging one commodity for another : the exchange of goods or services for other goods or services without using money. CalTrade Exchange takes the traditional idea of barter and turns it into a modern, transactional experience using an alternative form of currency known as “barter dollars” or “CalTrade Dollars”.

Why barter?

Barter has evolved to be much more than apples for oranges! Barter enables businesses to increase revenue and profits by filling excess down time or selling unsold inventory to a market beyond your cash paying customers. CalTrade Exchange can put your idle resources to work!

Is bartering legal?

Yes! Under the “Tax Equity and Financial Responsibility Act of 1982,” Trade Exchanges are recognized as third-party record keepers for barter transactions and client barter revenue. Trade Exchanges are now legal custodians alongside banks, credit unions, and brokers.

Does bartering affect my taxes?

The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) and the State of California consider barter business the same as cash business. CalTrade Exchange income is a taxable revenue stream. Each client/business transacting more than CAL$400 in a calendar year will be subject to a 1099-B.

What is the benefit of bartering through an exchange?

The problem with one-on-one bartering is that each business/individual must have exactly what the other is looking for. Trade exchanges allow their clients to barter services and/or products, collect barter dollars and accumulate them into an account that the member can then use within the exchange only for what they need, allowing each client to trade with each other.
